Description
The Kitchen Garden bounding wall and Gardener's Cottage are notable structures located on the north side of Woodhouse Lane in Dunham Massey. The wall may date back to the early 17th century, while the cottage is believed to have been built around 1702. Both features are depicted in a painting by J. Harris from 1751.
The wall is constructed with English garden wall bond brickwork, featuring stone dressings and copings, topped with a stone slate roof. It has a roughly square layout with gateways at the center of each side, and the Gardener's Cottage is integrated into the north-west side. The wall includes buttresses at regular intervals, a roll-moulded weathered stone coping, heating flues on the north-west side, and an advanced south-west gateway with a segmental-headed recessed arch and raised coping, dating to around 1750.
The Gardener's Cottage consists of three bays in width and one bay in depth, with two storeys and a mono-pitched roof. The elevations are symmetrical, featuring a central door with a plain stone surround, a two-light chamfered mullion window on either side, and three small casement windows above. The gables are topped with coped kneelers, and the ridge has a stone cornice coping. On the garden side, there is a central segmental-headed cart entry, which now serves as a door, adorned with keystones, and a total of five two-light stone chamfered mullion windows.
