Description

102 Syke Road is an early 19th-century weaver's cottage, designed by an unknown architect and constructed from sandstone.

The cottage is a double pile dwelling. The ground floor is divided lengthwise, while the upper floor consists of several rooms that open onto a hall. The basement features a single room and a corridor.

On the exterior, the west elevation is made of watershot coursed sandstone. The ground floor has a two-light wooden top-hung sash window set in a stone surround with a key-stone lintel. The first floor displays a line of weavers’ windows in stone. The cellar is illuminated by a three-light mullioned window in stone. The rear elevation is rendered stone, featuring square timber windows in stone surrounds and a pair of French windows. The roof is covered with stone and has brick chimney stacks.

Inside, the ground floor includes a large fireplace with a stone bressummer that projects from the wall. The upper storey, which has been modernised, is supported by exposed plain timber beams and retains the exposed stone surrounds and mullions of the weavers’ windows, along with a cast iron register grate. The garret is supported by exposed moulded timber beams. The cellar, constructed of brick and stone, contains remnants of a bricked-up door and window at the rear, as well as a fireplace.
