Description

This is an early 19th century weaver’s cottage of sandstone construction, built for a weaver. It is a double pile dwelling, meaning it has rooms on both sides of a central passage. The ground floor is divided along its length, and the upper floor contains several rooms that open onto a hall. The west-facing elevation is built of watershot coursed sandstone and features a three-light wooden casement window with a plain stone surround on the ground floor. A line of stone weavers’ windows marks the first floor. The rear elevation is of harled stone with square timber windows and a pair of French windows. The roof is covered in stone. Internally, the ground floor is paved with flagstones and features a large fireplace with a projecting stone surround. The upper storey is supported by exposed plain timber beams. A reused window cill forms the bressummer above the kitchen fireplace. The upper storey is mostly modern, but retains the exposed stone surrounds and mullions of the original weavers’ windows. The garret is also supported by exposed plain timber beams.
