Description

This is a pair of back-to-back cottages, built around 1810, which have now been converted into two separate houses. The cottages are constructed of brick with stone dressings and a stone slate roof. They are three stories high and one bay wide, with workshops on the top floors and workshops/cellar dwellings in the basement – the basement dwellings have separate access. The ground and first floors each originally had sash-shaped window openings, now boarded up, with stone sills and lintels. A door with square-cut monolithic jambs and lintels is on the right-hand side, and a similar door and a three-light flat-faced mullion window are located within the basement. The second floor features a three-light "weaver's window" (formerly five lights), with sill and head bands, and corbelled eaves. The rear of the dwellings is similarly detailed, though formerly it had mullioned windows on every floor. This demonstrates group value as an example of early industrial housing.
