Description

Darnley Cottage is a weavers cottage dating to the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of coursed sandstone with a stone slate roof. The cottage is two storeys high, with cellars and a basement to the rear, and is attached to another, unlisted, cottage on its north-west side.

The front (south-west) elevation features an original front door set back to the right, with stone jambs, and a three-light window to the left, featuring stone mullions and four-over-four sash windows (which are replacements). A sill band runs across the first floor, where a similar six-light window is located above. The rear elevation has an original central entrance with stone jambs. To the right is a large multi-paned window, with two modern multi-paned sashes above. Below are two doors leading to outside store rooms. A rebuilt section is situated to the left, featuring matching windows on each floor. The south-east side elevation has a gable end to the left (towards the front), and a curved gable end to the right (towards the rear), with a central section set back at first floor level, covered by a pent roof. A first floor window in this section retains its original glazing.

The front door has six panels externally and two planks internally, with long strap hinges fixed to iron pintles, and an original internal iron latch and lock case. The staircase rises opposite the entrance, and a door to the left leads into the main living room, which has two plain beams running to the chimney breast. The fireplace is a modern replacement. A second room is located to the rear on the left, with a replacement fireplace, and a kitchen occupies the space of a former scullery and wash-house on the right. Remnants of a former rear staircase are buried in the space between the kitchen and rear room. Two of the bedrooms contain 19th-century fireplaces. The roof structure appears original to the 19th century, with one substantial machine-cut truss visible in the rear section.
