Description

This is a large, detached former house, dating from the early 19th century. Originally known as Springfield House, it was later converted into a town hall. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with a projecting plinth. It has a hipped slate roof and a later addition of a small, raised glass lantern. Ashlar chimney stacks are also present. The building is two storeys high and features a continuous sill band to the first floor, as well as a moulded eaves cornice and a blocking course. The front of the building has three bays, while the sides have four. It has sash windows with glazing bars, and the ground floor windows are full-height. A central door leads to the main front, approached by three steps leading to a portico with fluted columns topped with 'Tower of the Winds' capitals, and backed by pilasters. A full dentil-detailed entablature sits above the portico. A staircase window is located on the right side of the building.

The interior features an elliptical arched central lobby, with moulded plaster cornices and panels to the ceiling. Panelled doors have moulded plaster pediments above them, decorated with foliage and fruit, and are all of a matching design. The windows are shuttered. A curving stone staircase has a wrought iron baluster and a mahogany rail; the soffit of each step is shaped. The decoration of the rooms has been altered over time.
