Description
Springfield Mill consists of two mill blocks joined at a right angle by a mid-19th century section that is not of interest. The north range dates from around 1820, while the east range is dated 1834. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone, with the south elevation of the east block rendered. It features slate roofs with gable copings and stone brackets supporting iron gutters. The mill stands four storeys high with an attic.
On the east side of the north range, there are six bays of windows featuring late 19th century or early 20th century industrial casements, along with a continuous head band and a central bay for loading doors. The three central bays project slightly and are topped with a pediment that includes a blind oval and a clock in the tympanum. There are continuous clerestory attic windows with glazing bars, and a square lantern on the roof with a pent roof and finial.
On the north side of the east range, there are ten bays of late 19th century or early 20th century industrial casements. The central four bays project slightly and are topped with a shallow pitched gable that features a Venetian window with original glazing bars, beneath which is the date 1834. There is also a continuous clerestory attic window with glazing bars.
