Description

No. 128 on Yorkshire Street is a house that was formerly a police office and is now used as offices. It dates from the late 18th century and underwent alterations around 1900. The front elevation is made of brick, while the side and rear are constructed from coursed sandstone, topped with a stone slate roof. The building has two bays and two storeys, featuring gable stacks and stone quoins. There is a canted oriel window on the right side of the first floor, with replacement tripartite sash windows elsewhere. The central doorcase is framed with an architrave, plain frieze, and cornice. At the rear, there is a canted bay from around 1800 with a tripartite sash window above it. The building has 19th-century brick and rendered extensions on both the right and left sides. Inside, it retains a room with original panelling and a wide central staircase. This building is historically significant as it was where the government of the town was managed by Improvement Commissioners from 1825 to 1856, prior to the incorporation of the Borough. It is a rare survival from an important period in the development of local government in England.
