Description
No. 1 James Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built in 1874 and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof with a single side wall and ridge stacks. It has a chamfered plinth and eaves, a first-floor band, and coped gables with kneelers.
The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The east front, facing James Street, has a central panelled door flanked by three-light cross mullioned windows, all set beneath a cornice with a patterned tile frieze. Above the door is a plain sash window. To the right, there is a rounded bay window that rises three storeys, topped with a conical roof and featuring a three-light mullioned window on each floor. To the left, there are two plain sash windows, and above them is a canted stone oriel window with three lights, supported by corbels and also topped with a conical roof.
On the south gable, which faces Eastgate, there is a canted bay window with a parapet and an iron crest, situated above a double sash window with a cornice. To the left of this gable, there is a set-back gabled wing and a flat-roofed addition from the 19th and 20th centuries. The interior has not been inspected.
