Description
6, Eastgate is a former public house, now an antique shop, dating back to the 14th century, with alterations from the 18th and 20th centuries. The building has a timber-frame structure with a brick and stone underbuild, all rendered, and is covered by hipped and gabled plain tile roofs, punctuated by single ridge and gable stacks. It features a rendered plinth, wooden gutters, and a single shouldered coped gable.
The building is two storeys plus attics, arranged over three bays, and is in an L-plan layout with a gabled wing to the right. The front has two 20th-century glazed doors, flanked by single recessed 20th-century bow windows. To the left is a carriage opening. Above, to the right, is a segmental-headed triple sash window. To the left, there is a paired wooden cross casement and a 20th-century window. Above again, in the gable, is a segmental-headed glazing bar sash.
The rear has a near-central stair turret and, to its left, a stud wall with a diagonal brace. To the north are a range of single-storey outbuildings.
Inside, the building has a single purlin common rafter roof supported by wind braces. A notable feature is an 18th-century staircase with vase and stem balusters. The building was formerly known as the Black Horse Inn.
