Description

Town Head House, now used as offices for the Department of Social Services, is an early 19th-century building. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a 20th-century roof covering. The building is two rooms wide and three rooms deep, featuring a central entrance and staircase. The three-bay elevation has a bracketed gable and is two storeys tall with an attic storey. The entrance door is flanked by attached Doric columns and has a cast iron fanlight topped with an open pediment. A stone plinth and a band of stone that runs around the first floor encircle the building. The windows have stone sills and lintels, which may have replaced flat brick arches, while stone keystones can still be seen on the side elevations. The tall central window on the first floor features a stone architrave, consoles cornice, and marginal glazing bars. To the left, there is a rebuilt two-storey canted bay window, and to the right, a large five-sided, two-storey bay with a pyramidal roof and a small gablet.
