Description

Higher House and Higher House Cottage is a late 18th-century house and cottage located on the north-west side of Clough Road, Saddleworth. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed watershot stone with a slate roof. The original house is a 2-bay single-depth structure, with a double-depth cottage added to the right, and a later wing extending far to the right. Bay 1 was built slightly later than Bay 2. The front features 4-light and 8-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows on the ground floor, and 5-light and 7-light windows on the first floor. A door with overlight and square-cut surround is positioned between the two bays. A ridge chimney stack is present. Other windows include 2-, 3- and 4-light windows to the gable and rear elevations, along with a blocked taking-in door. The cottage (Bay 3) projects forward and has 4-light windows on each floor, 2-light gable windows, blocked owl holes in the gable, and a small garage wing to the right.
