Description
This is a pair of cottages, The Cottage and Heys Cottage, located on the north side of Grains Road in Saddleworth. The Cottage has a datestone indicating 1616, but the majority of the structure dates from the late 18th century. Heys Cottage features door lintels inscribed "JGJ 1759" (Greaves). The cottages are constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone with a graduated stone slate roof.
The two houses are arranged as parallel ranges, backing onto each other. Heys Cottage is one bay wide, with a two-storey wing built later, obscuring the original gable entrance and its dated lintel. It has five and three-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows, a later two-light window, gable chimney stacks, and a 20th-century porch. The Cottage has a door on the right, also obscured by a later porch, along with three and four-light ground floor windows and four, three, and four-light first-floor windows, all with recessed flat-faced stone mullions. Square eaves gutter brackets and gable chimney stacks are also present.
