Description
Edgehill is a former laithe-house located on Dark Lane in Saddleworth, dating back to 1737, as indicated by the inscription "IBNB 1737" on the door lintel, although it has undergone later alterations and additions. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and features a slate roof. It has a two-unit, two-storey layout, with the former barn situated on the left and an additional bay added on the right. The barn has been largely rebuilt and has had windows inserted.
The original house includes ground floor windows with three, four, and two lights, and first floor windows with two sets of three lights, all featuring double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullions. The right bay, added in the mid-18th century, contains recessed cavetto-moulded mullion windows with five and four lights. There are also gable windows with two, three, and four lights, as well as one, two, and three-light windows at the rear. A blocked winnowing door is present at the rear of the barn. The building has ridge and gable chimney stacks and quoins, and there is evidence of a former smoke hood inside.
