Description

This milestone, dating from 1896, is made of cast iron and features a triangular shape with a downwards sloping top and a hollow back. The cast lettering on the milestone reads 'CHESHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL 1896' at the top, 'GREAT BUDWORTH 5 MILES, NORTHWICH 8' on the left side, and 'STOCKTON HEATH 1 3/4 MILES, WARRINGTON 3' on the right side. It was erected on the east side of London Road/A49, which was formerly an 18th century turnpike road. This late 19th century milestone is significant as it serves as a physical marker of the area's transport history.
