Description
This milestone, dating from 1896, is made of cast iron and features a triangular shape with a downward sloping top and a hollow back. The top of the milestone has cast lettering that reads 'CHESHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL 1896'. On the left side, it indicates distances to Stretton (1.5 miles), Great Budworth (6 miles), and Northwich (9 miles). The right side lists Stockton Heath (3/4 mile) and Warrington (2 miles). The maker's mark on the bottom of the left face reads 'W H SMITH & CO. MAKERS, WHITCHURCH'.
Originally erected on the east side of the A49 in Appleton, this milestone stands on what was once an 18th-century turnpike. It is a notable example of late 19th-century roadside markers and reflects the area's transport history.
