Description
The former canal warehouse, located on the south bank of the Bridgewater Canal, likely dates from the late 18th century, with an extension added in the early 19th century. It is constructed of brown brick in English garden wall bond and features a roof that has been replaced with corrugated asbestos. The building stands four storeys tall, including a semi-basement facing the road.
The symmetrical front facing the canal has a vertical brick joint at the centre, aligned with the lintel level of the fourth storey. It includes a circular pitch-hole in the gable and a pair of loading doors on each side of every storey, which have combined timber lintels and cills, along with remnants of loading balconies; most of the boarded doors have been altered. The right side, as viewed from the canal, has loading doors on the second, third, and fourth storeys, with windows on each side of every storey, all set under round brick arches, except for the top left window, which is square-headed and blocked.
The left half of the building facing Birchdale Road features round-arched openings, and a central vertical brick joint indicates that the right (east) half was likely added in the early 19th century. An attached weatherboarded shed is present but is not considered of special interest.
