Description
The Church of St Thomas is a church built in 1868 by E.G. Paley. It is constructed from pinkish-red sandstone and features roofs made of graded Westmorland green slates. The building includes a four-stage battlemented west tower with an octagonal turret on the southeast corner, a four-bay nave with a south aisle beneath a parallel ridged roof, a south porch, a north transept, a north vestry or sacristy with an organ loft, and a two-bay chancel. The church showcases geometrical tracery, with stained glass in the west window, the three eastern bays of the south aisle, the east and south windows of the chancel, and the north window of the transept.
Inside, there is an arcade of round columns topped with stiff-leaf capitals and an arch-braced roof. The north and south walls of the chancel feature richly coloured patterned tilework in memory of William Hayes, who served as vicar from 1852 to 1875. The reredos is made of marble and embossed patterned tiles. This church is the successor to an earlier church built in 1838.
