Description

The Red Lion Inn is a public house with attached outbuildings, dating from around 1800, with extensions added in the early 19th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond red brick and features a Welsh slate roof with three brick ridge stacks.

The building has a central entrance leading to a corridor, with two bars on the left and a drinking lobby with a bar counter on the right, along with a further bar located behind. The public bar, known as the 'Vaults', is situated in the extension to the right.

The exterior is three storeys high, with a symmetrical, central part that has rusticated quoins. The central windows above the doorway are blocked, while the lower storeys feature tall sash windows and the third storey has squat sashes. The entrance includes a recessed porch with a basket-arched plaster surround, complete with a keystone and square springers, set within a broader basket-arched brick recess. The extension has a smaller basket-arched brick recess that contains the 'Vaults' door, flanked by single sash windows on either side and one on each of the upper floors. The rear windows present a varied assemblage of casements.

Inside, the rear left-hand bar includes fixed seating and bell pushes, while the rest of the furnishings are largely from the late 20th century. The Red Lion Inn is a good example of a public house that retains its multi-room plan and a drinking lobby.
