Description

This milestone, made of cast iron, was erected in 1896 and is located on the east side of the A49. It has a triangular shape with a downward sloping top and a hollow back. The top features cast lettering that reads 'CHESHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL 1896'. On the left side, it indicates distances to Stretton (2.5 miles), Great Budworth (7 miles), and Northwich (10 miles), while the right side shows 'WARRINGTON 1 MILE'. The maker's mark at the bottom of the left face reads 'W H SMITH & CO. MAKERS, WHITCHURCH'. This milestone is significant as it represents the area's transport history and is a notable example of late 19th-century roadside markers.
