II Milestone, 1896, cast iron. Triangular, downward sloping top, hollow back. Cast lettering reads 'CHESHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL 1896' (top); 'STRETTON 2 1/2 MILES, GREAT BUDWORTH 7 MILES, NORTHWICH 10' (left); 'WARRINGTON 1 MILE' (right). Maker's mark at bottom of left face reads 'W H SMITH & CO. MAKERS, WHETCHURCH'.

HISTORY: Milestone erected in 1896 on the east side of the A49, formerly an C18 turnpike road.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: Late C19 cast iron milestone prominently located along the A49 represents significant historic interest and a reminder of the area's transport history. SJ6137286403
