Description

Lower House Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in the early 18th century, with 19th-century additions. It is constructed of red English garden wall bond brick and has a slate roof. The building is a single range with a 19th-century wing and an outshut at the rear. It stands two storeys tall and features an entrance front with three bays. The central window, which is basket arched and likely originally a doorway, has a tablet above it that contains a Latin inscription identifying the house as built by William Meredith Bart in 1733 and remodelled by Egerton of Tatton in 1888. The windows on either side have splayed heads with keystones and contain three-light casements; the upper windows have replaced voussoirs. There is a porch on the left-hand side, added in 1888, which serves as the entry to a hunting lodge that consists of one room with two bays. This addition caused the removal of the penultimate left-hand window to the right. Both gable ends have round openings that are now bricked in. The right-hand side gable end features a 19th-century ovolo-moulded ground floor window with two lights. Inside, there are long, stout, chamfered and end stopped beams in the parlour and the current kitchen.
