Description

The guidepost, dating from the late 19th century to early 20th century, was designed and cast by W H Smith and Co (Whitchurch) Ltd. It is made of cast iron and features a hollow octagonal shaft. The lower section is vertical and forms a plinth, while the upper section tapers upward from a plain torus base and is topped with a simple moulded cornice. Above the cornice, a narrower round-section shaft rises to support three cast-iron direction fingers. These fingers have raised black-painted sans serif capital letters on a white background, indicating directions to MOBBERLEY / ROSTHERNE; RINGWAY / WILMSLOW; and HALE / ALTRINGHAM. The fingers are designed with scalloped outer corners, an integral spandrel bracket, and paired cast shaft hoops secured by locking nuts. At the top of the hollow shaft, a ball finial shaped like a pawn chess piece completes the guidepost.
