Description

The guidepost at Four Lane End is a cast iron structure, likely from the 1870s, created by W H Smith and Co. in Whitchurch, Shropshire. It features an octagonal shaft with a plinth and cap. The guidepost has square-ended cast iron plates displaying raised sans-serif capital letters indicating distances to various locations: Helsby 2 Alvanley 1 1/2; Mouldsworth 2 Chester 11; Liverpool Hospital Kingswood 3 (with an added plate for Crossley Hospital Kingswood); and Frodsham 3. The guidepost is topped with a ball finial and stands at approximately 2 meters tall.
