Description
Commonside Farmhouse is a farmhouse, likely dating from the mid-17th century, with extensions added in the early and late 20th century and subsequent alterations. The gable end facing the road is constructed of coursed red sandstone rubble, while the remainder of the building is encased in brickwork with a thatched roof. It is a one-and-a-half-storey building with two windows on the left-hand side. A rear wing extends to the right, incorporating one window. The original 17th-century portion is on the left. The gable to the road features a three-light recessed mullioned window on the lower floor, and a weathered band of stone at the first floor level. A rebuilt ridge chimney is positioned opposite the doorway, and two dormers have been inserted into the roof. Inside, the farmhouse has a lobby-entrance plan. The inglenook fireplace in the left room features a cambered, bevelled bressumer of oak resting on oak-framed sides, and a small fire window, now looking into the later rear room. Each lower front room contains a chamfered oak beam, and an altered full cruck frame is located between the two rooms. A staircase has been removed. The right-hand bedroom has oak purlins, and some unwrought oak rafters are also visible. The early 20th-century rear wing was given a staircase and an upper storey in the late 20th century.
