Description
Ash Cottage is a cottage built in 1755, which has been altered over time. It is constructed of rendered brick on a now-rendered sandstone plinth and features a grey slate roof. The cottage is two storeys high and has four windows. The front door consists of six fielded panels set within a moulded pedimented case. Each storey has two slightly recessed 16-pane oak casements of late Georgian style, while a similar casement above the door has had its bars removed. The right bay, which is slightly recessed, has one replaced small-pane casement on each storey. The older part of the cottage has corbelled eaves, although this detail is now concealed by render. There is a brick ridge chimney located behind the doorway, and a datestone marked TM:1755 is present.
Inside, the cottage has a lobby-entrance plan and features a brick barrel-vaulted cellar with a v-jointed boarded door. There is a replaced stair immediately behind the lobby. The structure suggests that the cottage underwent recasing and rebuilding in the 18th century and late Georgian period, around a 17th-century core, although no visible structure from that earlier period remains.
