Description
Poplar Tree Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1684 that has been altered and extended. It is constructed of painted brown brick on a sandstone plinth and features a grey slate roof. The building has two storeys and consists of two main rooms with a gable facing the road, along with a one-room right wing that was added later.
Notable architectural details include a cyma stone band at the first floor, which sits on a dentilled brick band of two courses, and another cyma stone band on a band of three brick courses, with the middle course set diagonally at the base of the front gable. There is a decorative band of raised diaper-work beneath the eaves. The blank front gable displays a stone inscription reading "IE:L:1684" at the center of the upper storey, flanked by projecting cambered arches that may have been the heads of former windows. Additionally, there is a blank oval panel with a moulded stone surround in the gable, and a flush narrow oval panel on the left side that may have been a former window or pitching eye. The rear corners of the building have flush stone quoins.
The farmhouse features a ridge chimney on the cross-wing and a flush gable chimney on the right wing. The entrance includes a four-panel half-glazed door set in a pedimented case in the right wing. The windows in both wings are 4 and 6-pane casements typical of the 19th century vernacular style. The interior has been altered, but there is an overmantel in the rear room of the cross-wing that likely dates from the late 17th century.
