Description

ALVANLEY C.P. HELSBY ROAD SJ 47 SE North East Side 4/7 Poplar Tree Farmhouse. GV II Farmhouse: 1684 altered and extended, of painted brown brick on sandstone plinth; grey slate roof. 2 storeys, 2 rooms with gable to road with 1-room right wing added. Cyma stone band at 1st floor on dentilled brick band of 2 courses; cyma stone band on band of 3 brick courses, the middle course set diagonally, at base of front gable. Band of raised diaper-work beneath eaves. The blank front gable has stone at centre of upper storey inscribed IE:L:1684 with a projecting cambered arch, perhaps the head of a former window, to each side; a blank oval panel with moulded stone surround in gable. In left side a flush narrow oval panel may have been to former window or pitching eye. Flush stone quoins at rear corners. Ridge chimney on cross-wing; flush gable chimney on right wing. 4-panel half-glazed door in pedimented case in right wing. Windows in both wings are 4 and 6-pane casements of C19 vernacular type. Interior altered. Overmantel in rear room of cross-wing probably late C17.
