Description

Alvanley House is a house built in 1773, constructed of Flemish bond brown brick with a grey slate roof. The gable end facing the road is rendered. The building has two storeys and features three windows, along with one in a stone wing. The original door has been replaced with one in an early 20th-century gabled porch. The windows are 16-pane recessed sashes, with those on the lower storey set under gauged brick flat arches. The gable facing the road has a coped design with kneelers and a finial, likely added in the 19th century. There is a raised brick course at the eaves and two stone-capped brick chimneys.

Until the mid-20th century, the front room served as a post office and shop; when it was converted back into part of the house, the shop window was replaced with a paired 12-pane sash in the lower storey and a 16-pane sash above. The rear of the house also features 16-pane recessed sashes under wedge lintels.

Inside, there is a cellar that is partly brick barrel-vaulted, accessed by stone steps. The downstairs includes one six-panel door that is raised and fielded, and there is a dog-leg stair with well-crafted turned balusters leading to the upper floor, which has panelling on the landing. The upstairs doors consist of four fielded panels.
