Description

Causeway Bridges Farmhouse is a farmhouse that is believed to date from 1646, although it has been largely rewindowed in the 19th century and altered and extended at various times. The building is made of brown brick with grey slate roofs, featuring an irregular English garden wall bond. The front of the farmhouse has a central section that is two storeys high and has three windows. To the left, there is a projecting two-storey cross-wing with a sandstone plinth, which has two windows on the lower storey and one window above. A late 19th-century timber open porch with a lean-to roof is located in the central section near the junction with the left wing. All the windows on the front are four-pane late 19th-century inserted sashes. The farmhouse has three brick chimneys.

The flush cross-wing on the right contains mid-17th-century features at the right end and rear. These include a recessed two-course dogtooth string at the second floor, brick labels above a blocked window opening on the lower storey, and above a late 19th-century sash window on the middle storey in the right end. At the rear, there is a single-storey late 19th-century lean-to brick extension, which has two brick labels at the second storey; one window opening is blocked while the other has been altered to accommodate an eight-pane horizontal-sliding sash under a camber head. There is also a brick label above a blocked opening at the third (attic) storey, which is surmounted by a brick landing platform that once served a pigeon loft.

Inside, there are a few chamfered oak beams and a good oak newel dogleg stair, which is painted and leads to the second storey. This stair features three turned balusters per step.
