Description
Lower Alder Root Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the early 17th century. It has been extended and significantly altered over time. The exterior is pebbledashed and features a grey slate roof. The eastern side of the building appears to be the oldest part, consisting of two storeys and three windows, with a gable facing the road. The original timber windows have been replaced in openings that were probably once fitted with mullions.
Inside, the farmhouse contains several notable features. The front parlour on the right has a 16-panelled ceiling with deeply moulded main cross-beams and moulded secondary cross-beams, which are of late 15th-century style. The kitchen, located in the right rear room, includes an old oak doorframe and an oak beam supported by an oak corbel set in the chimney-breast. The bedroom above the kitchen has a similar beam and corbel, which are better preserved and more finely crafted.
