ALVANLEY C.P. MANLEY ROAD SJ 47 SE North East Side 4/14 Church of St. John. GV II Church 1860 by J S Crowther (architect's ground plan in Cheshire Record Office) at expense of Catherine Emma Arden, youngest daughter of Richard 1st Baron Alvanley. Red sandstone; gabled grey slate roofs. Early Decorated style. Nave with aisles under separate roofs; chancel with north vestry. Nave of 4 bays has corbelled west belfry with small steeple (2 bells). Geometrical west windows: of 3 lights to nave; of 2 lights to north aisle; Y- tracery widows to north aisle: 1 Y-tracery window and two 2-light windows with trefoil heads to south aisle; round Geometrical window to east end of north aisle; Y-tracery window to east end of north aisle. 2-light Geometrical north and south window to chancel; 3-light Geometrical east window. Coped gables have ornate crosses as finials. Interior: Simple arcades with circular columns and double-chamfered arches. Chancel arch has capitals only to corbelled responds; simple chamfered arch. Arched organ screen contains 4 sub-arches on polished marble columns, with Geometrical tracery. Nave stone-floored between pews; choir and chancel have encaustic tiles. Armorial glass. A good, largely unaltered interior with furnishings.
