Description

The Church of St John, built in 1860 by architect J S Crowther, is located on Manley Road in Alvanley. It was constructed at the expense of Catherine Emma Arden, the youngest daughter of Richard, 1st Baron Alvanley. The church is made of red sandstone and features gabled roofs covered with grey slate, designed in the Early Decorated style.

The nave consists of four bays and has aisles under separate roofs, along with a chancel that includes a north vestry. The west belfry is corbelled and topped with a small steeple housing two bells. The windows are geometrical in design, with three lights in the nave's west window, two lights in the north aisle's window, and Y-tracery windows in both the north and south aisles. The east end of the north aisle features a round geometrical window, while the chancel has two-light geometrical windows on the north and south sides, and a three-light geometrical window at the east end. The coped gables are adorned with ornate crosses as finials.

Inside, the church has simple arcades supported by circular columns and double-chamfered arches. The chancel arch is a simple chamfered design with capitals only on the corbelled responds. An arched organ screen features four sub-arches on polished marble columns with geometrical tracery. The nave has a stone floor between the pews, while the choir and chancel are laid with encaustic tiles. The interior includes armorial glass and remains largely unaltered, with its original furnishings intact.
