Description
The guidepost at the junction of Back Lane and Mobberley Road is an early 20th-century structure designed and cast by W H Smith and Co (Whitchurch) Ltd. Made of cast iron, it features a hollow circular section tapering shaft that rises from a moulded torus base. The shaft has a moulded architrave with a plain vertical frieze, topped by a simple moulded cornice. Above this cornice, a narrower round-section shaft supports four cast-iron direction fingers. These fingers display raised black-painted uppercase letters, measuring 3 inches (76 mm) high, on a white background, indicating directions and distances to various locations: RINGWAY 3¼, WILMSLOW 5, ROSTHERNE, MERE, MOBBERLEY 3¾, and ALDERLEY EDGE 7½. The fingers have straight corners and single cast shaft hoops secured by locking nuts. At the top of the hollow shaft, a cast-iron finial resembling the base of a pawn chess piece features an annulus roundel with recessed raised letters that read: ASHLEY BUCKLOW RDC. Additionally, a modern painted timber finger reading ASHLEY SCHOOL is attached by metal brackets to the top surface of the eastern finger.
