Description

This is a canal milestone located at Newbold Astbury on the Macclesfield Canal, dating from around 1830 and created for the Macclesfield Canal Company. It is made of ashlar sandstone, which has been tooled and shaped at the top. The south face of the milestone is inscribed with "From / Marple / 23 / Miles," while the north face reads "From / Hall Green / 3 1/4 Miles." This milestone is part of a notable series of milestones and distance markers, as well as bridges, along the Macclesfield Canal.
