Description

This is a mid-19th century chimney for an air shaft, built for William Clayton. It is made of coursed squared buff sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings. The chimney features an octagonal base with hammer-dressed coping that supports a circular chimney adorned with four false loopholes. A projecting moulded cornice supports a castellated top. This structure was intended to be the top of a ventilation shaft for a coal mine, with the draught provided by a furnace, although it was likely never used.
