Description

The Turret Cottages, now Nos. 4, 6, and 8, are a group of three cottages located on Windmill Lane in Bollington, built around 1840 for William Clayton. They were originally two cottages and a smithy. The cottages are constructed from buff sandstone rubble with a Kerridge stone-slate roof and three stone chimneys. The rectangular plan is evident in the 2-storey, 4-bay front. To the right are two 2-unit cottages, each featuring a door within a rough stone surround and two-light wooden casements, two of which have been altered, all beneath stone lintels. To the left is the former smithy, currently under repair, but with two two-light wooden casements visible above. A distinctive embattled parapet with flagged copings runs along the front of the building.
