Description
The stables and coach house at Endon Hall were built around 1835 for William Clayton. They are constructed from coursed squared buff sandstone rubble and feature a Kerridge stone-slate roof with a stone ridge. The building has a courtyard plan and is two stories high with a symmetrical five-bay front. The central bay projects forward and includes a coach entrance beneath a rubble four-centred arch. Above this entrance, there is a two-tier dovecot and a clock. The front is topped with a castellated parapet that has flagged copings. Behind the castellations, there is a hexagonal open wooden bellcote supported by plain wooden columns, topped with a copper-domed roof and a weathervane. The end bays also project slightly and have three-light stone mullions in the upper storey, while the remaining sections are blank except for ventilation slots. Inside the courtyard, the west range features four elliptical cart openings, all of which are blocked, and three circular pitch holes with ashlar surrounds above. The north range serves as the stables. This building is part of the original phase of construction at Endon Hall.
