Description

The drydock on the Macclesfield Canal, dating from around 1830, features sandstone rubble walls with heavy hammer-dressed sandstone blocks surrounding it. The drydock has a long rectangular shape that narrows at the west end, where there is a wooden sluice gate operated by a pulley on a 20th-century steel gantry. The floor is sloped towards a central drain. A wet dock of similar shape and construction connects the drydock to the canal. This structure is located at the end of the tramway that ran from Endon quarry to the canal, likely serving boats that transported stone slate.
