Description
The canal aqueduct over Grimshaw Lane, built around 1830 by William Crosley for the Macclesfield Canal Company, is a notable structure made of hammer-dressed buff sandstone with ashlar dressings. It features a barrel vault and horseshoe-shaped arches at both ends, each with a raised keystone. The coping is chamfered and extends down to ground level along the revetment walls, which terminate in square piers. Above the western arch, there is an added rubble parapet that supports a now roofless single-storey building, which has four openings facing west and an entrance from the towpath. Additionally, a flight of steps has been added along the southwest revetment wall, flanked by walls with rounded coping on either side.
