Description

Hollin Old Hall is a building with a complex history, originally a hall and later a farmhouse, now divided into two houses. The core of the building dates back to the early 17th century, with a substantial addition and raising of the roof in the mid-18th century for Richard Broster. A further, significant addition was made around 1870 for the Ascoli family, who undertook a complete remodelling of the house.

The construction is of coursed squared buff sandstone rubble, with a Kerridge stone-slate roof, a stone ridge, and three stone chimneys on the original rectangular range. The building includes a cellar with a barrel vaulted ceiling. The front facade, in three bays, features 19th-century windows with four-light chamfered stone mullions; two have 17th-century rubble hood moulds, and two hood moulds are present in isolation. Two-light windows are situated within the gables, also under rubble hood moulds. The rest of the house is built in a Jacobean style, with stone-coped gables and a mix of mullioned, transomed, and mullioned windows.

The western half of the interior largely dates from 1870. The cellar contains a large slab inscribed "This must stand here forever, Richard Broster 1757.” The room in the right-hand bay of the eastern half contains a large inglenook fireplace, featuring chamfered jambs and a fire beam. Adjacent to the fireplace is a blocked gable entry. The room also contains two chamfered ceiling beams with flat stops, and C18 wooden panelling brought from another location. A room to the rear has an Adam-style fireplace taken from Tadcaster Hall.
