Description

The monument, located 30 metres west of the junction with Elemore Lane in Easington Lane, is a war memorial built between 1920 and 1921 by J. Coxon for the Lambton and Hetton Colliery Company. It is constructed from coursed squared whitish sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a lead roof. The memorial consists of a tall six-stage column set on a plinth. The plinth has moulded coping and includes panels listing the names of the deceased in the first stage. The second stage contains a panel with the inscription "this memorial unveiled by Lord Joicey, August 27th, 1921." The third stage is adorned with a string course and pediments, while the upper stages feature cornices. A clock is set in a moulded surround in the fifth stage, and the sixth stage has louvred panels. The ogee roof is supported by wooden brackets and topped with an urn finial.
