Description
This monument, located 13.8 metres south of the Church of St. Michael in Easington Lane, commemorates the 28 men and boys who lost their lives in the Elemore Colliery disaster of 1886. Designed by Emley of Newcastle, the memorial features a grey granite pedestal set on a square base. At each corner, there are recessed columns made of pink granite that support a tall octagonal spirelet. The spirelet is adorned with four fleur-de-lis-coped gablets and broadens out to a pyramid topped with a cross finial. The east and west sides of the monument display panels with the names of the deceased, while the north side bears the inscription, "Dangers stand thick through all the ground to push us to the tomb," attributed to Dr. Watts.
