Description
The Pithead Baths, now the premises of Elemore Auto Parts Limited, are colliery baths that have been converted into workshops. They were built in 1933 by R.A. Frizell for the Welfare Committee. The building is constructed of brick in the Dutch school style and features a two-storey block surrounding a central water tower, with a one-storey porch and offices on the south and east sides.
The street-facing elevation includes a full-height blind bay on the left and a central one-storey porch. This porch has a concrete architrave above boarded double doors, which are flanked by narrow windows with wrought iron grilles. Above the door, there is a tall tripartite stair window with brick mullions and metal glazing bars, and a similar window is located in the right return of the stair. To the right, there is a full-height bay with a vehicle entrance that has roller doors. A decorative band of seven recessed brick courses runs at first-floor level and on the tower, while soldier courses at the windows conceal steel lintels. The parapets are made of soldier courses or bonded vertical courses.
Inside, there are stainless steel balustrades on the two original staircases, and some ceramic tiled shower compartments with integral towel hooks remain. In front of the building, there are geometric pattern wrought iron railings atop a low brick wall, which features curved brick coping along the street, canted at the corner, and extending partly along the right return. This building is historically significant as it is the only remaining structure from Elemore Colliery.
