Haswell War Memorial

The Haswell War Memorial is a tall, polished grey granite structure located in the churchyard of St Paul’s Church. It features a small Latin cross atop a large, tapering pedestal, which stands on a two-stepped base made of granite for the upper step and concrete for the lower step. The plain entablature beneath the cornice is adorned with lightly incised patterns that are also repeated below the inscriptions.

The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal states, "GREATER LOVE HATH NO/ MAN THAN THIS, THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS." This is followed by "ROLL OF HONOUR/ NAMES OF THE MEN/ FROM THE PARISH OF HASWELL/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR KING & COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ “THEIR BRIGHT SPIRITS STILL/ TENANT THE HEARTS OF THOSE/ WHO LOVED THEM. THEY LIE/ IMPERISHABLY FAIR, CROWNED/ WITH THE GARLANDS OF/ IMMORTAL YOUTH." The names of those commemorated are inscribed on the remaining three sides of the pedestal.
