Description
The Thornley War Memorial is located on the north side of High Street. It is a long, curving stone wall approximately 2.5 meters high, constructed from Dunhouse stone sourced from Staindrop. The central section features a raised stone panel that stands out above the rest of the wall. In the center of this panel is a plain Latin cross carved in relief, flanked by the main dedicatory inscription and two panels listing names.
The inscription, which is divided to the left and right of the cross, reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE EMPLOYEES AND RESIDENTS OF THORNLEY WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE WARS." Below the cross, a quotation from the Gospel of St John is incised: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
The two rectangular name panels, each framed by a raised moulded border, commemorate the dead from the First and Second World Wars. Additionally, there are two small plaques on either side of the central panel that list further names from the First World War onwards. In front of the memorial, a low stone wall outlines a flower bed, which includes a central stepped platform beneath the main plaque for placing wreaths and floral tributes.
