Description
The Wheatley Hill War Memorial Cross is a granite memorial located outside the former mortuary chapel, now known as the Wheatley Hill Heritage Centre, at Wheatley Hill Cemetery. The memorial features a rough-hewn granite wheel-head cross that stands approximately 3.5 meters tall. A reversed sword is carved in low relief on the front face of the cross. The cross shaft rises from a tapering granite plinth, which has a principal dedicatory inscription on its front face that reads: "IN MEMORY OF THOSE OF THIS VILLAGE WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 ALSO 1939 – 1945." The plinth is set on a single granite step.
On either side of the memorial cross, there are two polished granite pillars that display the names of those commemorated. In front of the memorial, there is a square kerbed area filled with stone chippings, which includes a small stone inscribed with the words: "WHEN YOU GO HOME, TELL THEM OF US AND SAY – FOR YOUR TOMORROWS WE GAVE OUR TODAY." These additional structures are not included in the listing.
