Description
The Wingate Grange Colliery Disaster Memorial is a colliery disaster memorial built in 1907, designed by Douglas Crawford and sculpted by the Borrowdale Brothers of Sunderland.
This sandstone memorial stands approximately 4 metres high and takes the form of a faceted, tapering obelisk. It is set upon a corniced base that features scroll brackets at its bottom. Above this base is a pedestal with squared corners that frames convex panels on each side. The entire structure rests on a moulded plinth and a two-stepped base.
The front panel, which is partly illegible, bears the inscription: "THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED/ BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/ TO THE MEMORY OF THE/ TWENTY SIX MEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES/ IN THE EXPLOSION AT/ WINGATE GRANGE COLLIERY/ OCTOBER 14TH 1906. LET THEM REST FROM THEIR LABOURS." The east face of the pedestal is inscribed with the names "BORROWDALE BROS./ SCULPTORS/ SUNDERLAND./ DOUGLAS CRAWFORD/ ARCHITECT." The other faces of the memorial list the names of those who perished in the disaster.
