Description
West Lodge, along with its gate piers and gate tower, was built around 1800 by William Atkinson as the former gate lodge to the Castle Eden Estate. The structure is made of limestone ashlar, and the roof of the lodge is not visible.
The lodge itself is asymmetrical, featuring a two-storey, one-bay tower on the left, which is enclosed by a one-storey L-plan wing at the rear. The design is in the Gothick style, characterized by a chamfered plinth, hoodmoulds, and embattled parapets. The tower section includes a two-light pointed-arched window with Gothick glazing bars and a similar single-light window above it. To the left, there is a semi-octagonal gate pier, and the right return has similar windows along with a tall stepped octagonal stack at the rear. The lower wing has a former doorway on the left with a raised shield above it and lancet windows at the rear.
The octagonal gate piers stand about 2.5 meters high and feature concave-sided capitals topped with low pyramidal caps, although the gates themselves are missing. The square gate tower, which is approximately 4.5 meters high and located at the far left, has embattled parapets, a gate pier respond on the right return, and a blocked lancet at the rear.
There are 20th-century additions to the left of the lodge and a 20th-century embattled wall made of concrete that runs west from the gate tower, which is not considered of special interest.
