Description

The Lodge is a former gate lodge dating from the late 19th century, with additions made in 1928 that match the original style. It was originally part of the Castle Eden Estate. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed sandstone with ashlar detailing, and features fishscale-tiled roofs topped with stone chimneys. It has an L-shaped layout. A one-storey gabled porch, which projects from the rear corner and includes a bellcote, fronts a two-storey, one-bay section. The front features a three-light flat-mullioned window with leaded casements, and a gabled half dormer supported by three corbels. The roof is steeply pitched, with overhanging coped gables, crested ridge tiles, and a truncated right chimney. The left return includes a three-light window, a first-floor band supported by corbels, and a small square oriel. The gable of the return has pierced bargeboards and a spike finial. A two-storey, one-bay addition to the left return features a three-light window dated 1928, and a half dormer. This section’s steeply-pitched roof has a left end chimney with a re-set ornamental 19th-century chimneypot.
