Description
The Primitive Methodist Church, built in 1858 as indicated by a plaque in the central gable, is a chapel located on Railway Street in Hetton-le-Hole. The front is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with an ashlar plinth, quoins, and dressings, while the other walls are made of limestone rubble. The building features a Welsh slate roof and consists of two storeys and a basement, arranged in three bays.
The central tripartite windows on the first floor are stepped and round-arched, complete with keystones, and are set beneath a wide round relieving arch. The entrance is approached by rendered flights of steps with iron handrails leading to double doors that have fanlights and keystones in the outer bays. These doors are framed by raised ashlar panels with cornices that create projecting cills for the keyed, round-arched windows above. The sash windows, mostly featuring margin lights, have seen some alterations to the glazing in the central windows. There are blank stuccoed panels above the side windows.
The first-floor band prominently displays the words "PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHAPEL." The building is topped with sloping coped side parapets, which are defined by raised arched end blocks, and features a dropped, shaped central gable with a pediment-like top. Round-arched upper windows are present on the returns. Historically, it is noted that the church is said to incorporate stone sleeper blocks from George Stephenson's Hetton Colliery railway and was built by the miners of Hetton Colliery.
