Description

Houghton Hall Young Men's Christian Association is a manor house that has been converted into a club. It dates from the early 17th century and is constructed of limestone rubble with sandstone dressings. The building has a nearly square plan and stands three storeys tall, featuring four windows on the front and three on the returns. The ground and first floor windows are four-light, while the second floor windows are three-light, all with mullions in chamfered surrounds topped with label moulds. The entrance door is located in the third bay, designed in a flattened Tudor arch with a chamfered surround that includes lozenge stops; above the door is a high triangular panel featuring an almond-shaped window. Similar doors on the returns have moulding that defines the pediment. The building is accented with stone quoins and has a renewed ashlar parapet.

Inside, the main room on the ground floor features arcaded panelling, a cornice, and a pilastered chimney piece. The architraves throughout the building are detailed, and the well stair has balusters enclosed in hardboard, with a broad ramped handrail and square newel posts. Decorative plasterwork includes motifs of fleur-de-lis and rose on the stair wall, a rinceau frieze in the principal second floor room, and a highly decorated coved ceiling in the stairwell that features a sunburst centre panel.
