Description
Kepier Almshouses are a group of almshouses, later converted into three, then two separate dwellings, built in 1668 and restored around 1978. They are constructed from coursed squared sandstone with a pantiled roof. The building has an E-plan layout, featuring one central cottage flanked by two others. It is a single storey with five bays. The central door is set under a flattened Tudor arch, surrounded by a stop-chamfered frame with a triangular-stopped label mould. On either side of the door are three-light mullioned windows, which also have similar moulds. The returns to the street include a door in the angle and one three-light window, while the gables facing the street each have a three-light window, all matching the central house. The gable peaks display inscriptions and shields: the north side commemorates George Lilburn's contribution to building half of the hospital in 1668, and the south side notes an endowment from the Reverend William Sharp. The gables are topped with flat stone coping, and there is one transverse ridge chimney on each return.
